Mercedes-Benz speeds onto markets with 30,000 orders

Daimler has received more than 30,000 orders for its flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class, in less than three months since the model was launched, said the company today. The roll-out of the luxury car has been the fastest in the company's history. (Release)

The new Merc is now available in all of Daimler's key markets – arriving in Europe's showrooms at the end of July, China's at the end of September and, as of this week, those in the US.

Last year the company sold over 65,000 S-Class cars. China is its largest market, followed by the US. The model – which, Diamler says, would have been unimaginable in the mid-range just a few years ago – uses 20 per cent less fuel than its predecessor, making it the most economical sedan in the luxury sector.

Daimler has invested heavily in achieving six variants of the S-class, pumping around €350m (£295m) into the S-Class bodyshell, around €130m into the vehicle press shop and around €70m into assembly, between 2011 and 2014. This year alone, investment in the company's Sindelfingen plant is expected to reach around €1bn (£850m).

The sixth-generation S-Class starts at around €72,000 euros (£60,852), including tax.
