Small parties to be squeezed as election nears
A NEW poll published last night shows that Britain’s smaller parties are being squeezed as the General Election nears.
Parties such as the Greens and Ukip have seen their potential vote shares rocket in recent times – yet voters could be turning back to the bigger parties, a poll by ICM revealed. The survey showed Ukip and the Green Party down by two points each, on nice per cent and seven per cent respectively.
Mike Smithson, who runs the website politicalbetting.com and is an expert on political polling, said it was “an inevitable factor” that the parties’ support would drop as voters get closer to making up their minds.
The same ICM poll shows a four point lead for the Conservatives, their largest with the company since 2012, thanks to a six point boost. It left them with 36 per cent, as Labour dropped one point to 3 per cent. The Lib Dems trail both on 10 per cent.
A separate YouGov poll released last night by the Sun newspaper showed the Tories and Labour neck-and-neck on 32 per cent of the vote each.
