Open success for Langer
GOLF: Bernhard Langer showed nerves of steel to card a final round 72 and clinch his first senior Major in the British Seniors Open at Caroustie.

The German held off the challenge of American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin to finish one shot clear on five-under-par to end a run of eight successive American victories.

“I’ve always wanted to win the Open Championship, I probably never will now but this is the next best thing,” the 52-year-old said.

Johnson claims home title
GOLF: Home favourite Richard S Johnson birdied the final hole to win the Scandinavian Masters and seal his first European Tour title since 2002.

The 33-year-old Swede carded a final round 71 to finish on 11-under-par and edge out Rafael Echenique in Stockholm.

Open champion Louis Oosthuizen made four bogeys in a disappointing final-round 73 to take a share of fourth, while a quadruple bogey nine on the 15th brought an end to overnight leader KJ Choi’s challenge.

Sinfield inspires Rhinos
RUGBY LEAGUE: Captain Kevin Sinfield was the Leeds inspiration with 15 points as the Rhinos stormed back into the top four of the Super League after coming from behind to beat Salford 31-22.

They trail third-place St Helens by three points after they completed a nine-try 50-6 thrashing of Wakefield.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield hammered Harlequins 40-4 and the Crusaders edged past Castleford 30-24.

Taylor claims 11th title
DARTS: World No1 Phil Taylor claimed his 11th StanJames.com World Matchplay title after recording a convincing 18-12 victory over Raymond van Barneveld in Blackpool last night.

The Power outgunned the Dutchman with a typically consistent performance to land the title for a third year running.
