Tesla’s long-awaited Model X SUV electric car is getting ready to hit the road

Today is a big day for those who pre-ordered Tesla's Model X electric car.

 

After years of delays, the company is finally unveiling the SUVs to these eager consumers – but they are still months away from actually getting their hands on the cars. 

 

At a special ceremony held in the company's plant in Fremont, California, the first cars will be paraded in front of the first purchasers, who are due to receive their deliveries in February 2016. 

 

The car, which was first unveiled in 2012, was initially supposed to be shipped to customers by the end of 2013, but the final release date has been pushed back a number of times since then. 

 

 

The Model X is similar to the Model S, except it is taller and wider with space for up to seven passengers. It has a heavier all-wheel-drive and a motor in front as well as in back. It also has fold-down doors that make it easier than ever to climb out when you're in a tight parking spot. 

 

The full specifications for the car have not yet been released, but it is expected to have a range of 240 miles and a top speed of 155mph. 

 

In a recent tweet, Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk said he expected the Model X to cost $5,000 more than the Model S, which starts at $75,000.
