Woods stoops to new low but keeps No1 spot
TIGER WOODS slumped to a new low on his favourite course yesterday as he crashed to his worst-ever four-round total as a professional.
The 14-time Major champion carded two double-bogeys in the final five holes to register a final-round 77 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone CC in Ohio and finish in a tie for 78th at 18-over-par.
“Shooting 18-over is no fun. It’s tough,” admitted Woods, who has previously won seven times at Firestone. “The only thing I can say is that all week I was patient. Unfortunately that’s not enough.”
The only good news for Woods was that he just managed to hold onto his status as world No1 ahead of this week’s US PGA title at Whistling Straits after world No2 also suffered a final-round collapse.
Mickelson carded a 78 to finish in a tie for 46th, while fellow American Hunter Mahan took the title with a fine 64 to finish on 12-under-par.
